Demographic Transitions

Demographic transition is the process in which a nation transitions from being a less industrialized society, with high birth and death rates, to an industrialized nation, with lower birth and death rates. Many countries have already been through this transition including the United States, England, and Canada.
The demographic transition to an industrialized society is detrimental for the environment because industrialized societies tend to use up nonrenewable resources and give off pollution. Industrialized nations have the largest ecological and carbon footprint relative to developing or nonindustrialized countries. Fortunately, there are some benefits to the process of demographic transition, including lower birth and death rates. Essentially, people in industrialized countries have fewer children and this in turn helps control the overall population size.
Demographic transition involves the following five stages:
Stage 1High birth rate, high death rate, low population size
Stage 2High birth rate, decreasing death rate, increasing population size
Stage 3Decreasing birth rate, decreasing death rate, increasing population size
Stage 4Low birth rate, low death rate, high population size
Stage 5Low birth rate, low death rate, population size decreasing
It should be noted that stage 5 is controversial, and it is sometimes not considered to be a stage. This is partially because so few countries are at this stage.
The following graph depicts the various stages of demographic transition:
Using the stages listed above, create a demographic and environmental timeline for one industrialized country, excluding the United States. The following are a few suggested industrialized nations:
  • Canada
  • England
  • Germany
  • Russia
  • Italy
You can download the Demographic and Environmental Timeline—United States of America to review an example of such a timeline.
Include the following points in your timeline in order to examine the advantages and drawbacks of demographic transition in your selected country:
  • Major historical changes that caused the shift from one stage to another (if available).
  • Changing population size through time (increasing or decreasing).
  • Increase or decrease of birth and death rates through time—particularly when considering the process of industrialization.
  • Environmental impact of this transition.
  • Dates (if available), series of events, and scholarly references for these items.
Support your timeline with appropriate examples and a minimum of three credible resources.
Present your timeline in a media that best displays the information you researched. This can be in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc, LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.xls, or LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.ppt.

Discussion—Biomes, Development, Pollution, and You

Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. However, when people realized that with the right watering and drainage system this area could become productive farmland, there arose ecological problems. The conversion of the prairie to farmland is the root cause of many ecological problems in this region.
Regardless of what biome you consider, humans have likely had an impact on the ecology of that area.
For this assignment, identify the biome in which you live. The following are a few examples of biomes:
  • Tropical rainforests: This biome has high average temperatures, high moisture levels, and high species diversity.
  • Prairies: The prairies have grassland-variable temperatures, variable moisture levels—depending on proximity to mountain ranges—and are mainly dominated by grasses and ungulate herbivores.
  • Deserts: These biomes have hotter average temperatures, low moisture, lower species diversity, and a composition of species limited mainly to those that are adapted to hot temperatures.
  • Temperate forests: The temperate forests have variable temperatures, high moisture levels, and higher species diversity.
  • Taigas: These biomes have colder average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and lower species diversity.
  • Tundras: The tundras have cold average temperatures, low moisture levels, and low species diversity.
  • Coral reefs: These biomes have high average temperatures and high species diversity.
  • Open oceans: These biomes have a wide range of temperatures and species diversity varies.
  • Chaparrals: The chaparrals have higher average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and are dominated mainly by grasses and shrubs.
  • Alpines: These biomes have low average temperatures, low precipitation, and receive high ultraviolet (UV) rays due to high elevation.
Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:
  • Explain how humans have impacted the biome in which you live. List the types of environmental damage that have been caused and the species that have been impacted.
  • Describe the major pollution issues for your biome, and elaborate on the sources of this pollution.
  • List any species that have become extinct in this biome.
Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.
Write your initial response in approximately 300–350 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
By Saturday, February 1, 2014, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, February 5, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. Address the following:

: Environmental Issues and the Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution, which began in the eighteenth century, has had an ongoing influence on society as well as the relationship between humans and their environment. With the onset of industrialization came the drastic increase in urbanization, setting up of factories in places which were once biomes, and the rapid development of land. All this occurred without assessing the long-term impact to the environment. Recognizing the importance of the Industrial Revolution era and the ongoing impact it has had on the environment is essential to learning how to help the environment and correct the damage of that era.
Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, complete the following:
  • Identify three of the most environmentally negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution and justify your choices. For example, the invention of the automobile revolutionized travel in a positive manner. However, this invention is causing some of the biggest environmental problems as a result of the extensive use of oil extracted from the earth.
  • Examine how these three negative impacts changed the environment; list the mechanisms through which this happened. For example, factories caused an increase in pollution through the release of toxic waste, which led to diminished and lost fish populations in rivers.
  • Explain the effect of the environmental movement on the process of industrialization in the United States during the 1970s.
  • Identify the laws passed to help ameliorate the environmental issues in the U.S. or around the world related to these three impacts. Have any laws been passed since this movement in the 1970s? If there have been laws implemented, summarize the spirit of the law and comment on the effectiveness of the law.
  • Based on your research, examine whether the state of the environment has become worse or has improved as a result of these laws. If you think conditions have not improved, suggest solutions or steps that must be done to improve the situation.
Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references. Be sure to include an additional page for references.
Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

Species Interactions and You

Humans interact with various species every day without actually realizing it. In the field of ecology, these interactions can either be interspecific (between species) or intraspecific (within species). Interactions between humans are known as intraspecific (within species) interactions. For example, interactions between a human and a pet would be interspecific, whereas interactions between a human and another human would be intraspecific.
Research interspecific and intraspecific interactions using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.
Part A
Complete the following:
  • Track your interactions with other organisms—between and within species—for one day.
  • Summarize your interactions throughout the day, using the terms from this module’s readings. If required, review the module’s readings again.
  • At a minimum, identify ten interactions that you witnessed or participated in today. Among those interactions, you should be able to identify a predatory-prey relationship, a competitive relationship, and a mutualism. You could also identify parasitic relationships or commensalisms, if you choose. Although you can repeat interaction types—for instance, you can have multiple mutualisms—the examples must differ. These are some examples:
    • Did you have a predatory-prey relationship with a chicken today? That is, did you eat chicken for lunch?
    • Did you have a competitive relationship with a coworker today? That is, were you competing for a raise?
Click here to download this template to track interactions with organisms.
Part B
Respond to the following:
  • For every interaction you identified above, describe an interaction in nature that is similar to what you experienced or witnessed. For example, if you had a predatory-prey interaction with your meal, identify and describe an example of a predatory-prey interaction in nature. Or, if you had a competitive interaction with your coworker, identify and describe a competitive interaction in nature.
  • Using the information you reviewed, explain why it is important to recognize these interactions.
Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.
Using the information that you compiled above, summarize your interactions for the day. Be sure to classify your interactions (parasitic, mutualism, etc.) and that you also determine if the interactions are considered intraspecific or interspecific.
Write your initial response in a minimum of 300–350 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
By Saturday, January 25, 2014, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, January 29, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. In your response posting, address the following by employing the concepts covered in module readings and your research:
  • Evaluate your fellow students’ examples of interactions in nature. Are the categories accurately identified? Are the examples valid?
  • What did you learn from the other students’ entries and comparisons?
  • Did you agree or disagree with students’ explanation of the importance of recognizing these interactions?
Be sure to give reasons for your responses.

Another topic: The business cycle

It probably goes without staying that a macroeconomy or national economy experiences periods of expansion (usually marked by increases in real GDP, employment, and production) and periods of decline  (usually marked by decreases in real GDP, employment, and production).  A prolonged period of decline across a national economy is called a recession.  While some people define a recession as t

Two of the most intense recessions in the past several generations in the United States were the Great Depression of 1929-1933 and the Great Recession of 2007-2009.  Which recession or depression was the most destructive to the U.S. economy?  Why?

2. WEEK 2 DQ 2 - Recent examples of expansionary fiscal policy

Expansionary fiscal policy is defined as a policy which a government implements which involves an increase in government spending and/or a decrease in taxation levels.  Sometimes a budget deficit might be involved with expansionary fiscal policy.  The goal with expansionary fiscal policy is to stimulate a national economy during times of declining economic activity.

Can you think of any recent examples of expansionary fiscal policy which have been used by the United States government during or since the Great Repression of 2007-2009?  How did these stimulus programs impact the economy?  Where they successful?  Why or why not?

What significant benefits have the technologies selected by the group had on law enforcement operations, specifically on community-oriented policing? Explain.

Research Sources

post a directly quoted paragraph from one source that is appropriate for your current research project. Then offer a paraphrase or summary of the same paragraph. Be sure to appropriately cite both the original paragraph and your paraphrase or summary.
After you have posted your source and paraphrase, by Wednesday, January 29, 2014, respond to at least two other students' posts. Some questions to ponder as your do so are as follows:
Are his or her listed sources appropriate for a university-level research project?
Are the materials properly cited?
Is the paraphrase or summary successful?
To receive discussion points, you must describe specific criteria that make the sources acceptable, the citation correct, or the paraphrase well written. Be wary of discussing the topic rather than offering substantive criticism.
Discussion question responses should be at least one-half, double-spaced page in length. Your responses to your peers' writing should be a good paragraph in length and should include specifics from the text if you are attempting to make a point.
Before you begin to write your discussion answers, think about the points made in the lecture regarding answering discussion questions. All of your answers must be in complete sentence form, and you should avoid plagiarism at all costs by citing the readings correctly and composing your own original responses. Responses that copy ideas from the Internet or from another student will be considered plagiarism and will be treated as such.

Synthesis Using Two Sources

Synthesis Using Two Sources
Length:  750 words
Due Date:
Desired Learning Outcomes:
1.    Formulate an original thesis based on critical reading and understanding of selected texts.
2.    Understand and apply the strategies of comparison/contrast (Chapter 34, Norton Field Guide) as ways of organizing and developing ideas.
3.    Use quotations and paraphrases correctly as supporting evidence from the source materials, incorporating tags for voice and the correct punctuation (see Handout and Quick Access Concise, Chapters 34 and 35).  NOTE:  Quoting and documentation are mandatory for this assignment; if they are lacking, the paper will fail.
4.    To focus on paragraph coherence (Quick Access Concise, Chapters 3g and 34g-h) in integrating sources in paragraphs for support.
5.    To use the MLA style of parenthetical documentation for quotation and paraphrases.  Most handbooks recommend that 10-15% (no more or less) of the word count of the paper should be direct quotation.
ASSIGNMENT:
For your synthesis essay, which consists of comparing and contrasting information from two sources, choose any two of the sources from chapter 14 in They Say, I Say.  (this is not limited to the original four that were assigned).
Review the two structures identified below and make notes on the essays.  Look for both similarities and differences, and especially think about a distinctive perspective you can put in your thesis statement.  We will practice thesis statements in class after discussing the essays.
The basic patterns of comparison/contrast are called block or parallel structure and point-by-point structure.  These structures and a sample paragraph for each are explained in the the Field Guide, pages 308-9.  Generic outlines are provided below as well.  You will also receive a handout on the thesis for this type of essay.

Case Felony Packet—File Preparation and Trial Preparation

Case Felony Packet—File Preparation and Trial Preparation

This assignment will help you explore the history of discovery laws in Colorado and how the discovery laws might have changed for the better or worse today. It is coupled with learning how to prepare a case to be turned over to the district attorney's (DA) office and prep a case for trial.
You are a deputy assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of the Roan County Sheriff's Office. You assisted in the Jenkins murder investigation and the Marshall attempted-murder investigation. You are in charge of preparing the case file (discovery) to be turned over to the DA's office. You are also in charge of working with the DA to prep the case for trial. Below is a list of tasks to complete to prep this case file to turn over to the DA's office. The last three points in the list help prep the case for trial.

Click here to download the learning resources folder.

Complete the following tasks:

  • Research the discovery laws in your state. What is discoverable in a criminal felony case? For example, under North Carolina General Statute Section 15A-501, all materials, including photos, notes, phone messages, etc., must be turned over to the state for prosecution of each felony case. Each state is different.

In a 1- to 2-page APA-formatted paper:

  • Part I: Compare and contrast any changes your state has made to the discovery laws within the past twenty-five years.
  • Part II: Compare and contrast your state's discovery law to North Carolina General Statute Section 15A-501.
  • To prep the case to turn over to the state, read the District 5 Discovery Policy, which applies to the Jenkins murder case file and the attempted-murder case file of Marshall (two different cases; the same crime scene).
  • To prepare the case to turn over to the state, Bates stamp, using the District 5 Discovery Policy numbering system outlined in #2 of the policy, all the documents in the case file (i.e., witness statements, evidence log, sketch, and lab report). If you do not have a Bates stamp, please follow the instructions in the District 5 Discovery Policy for inserting numbers in documents in #3 of the policy.
  • To prepare the case to turn over to the state, use the Case Summary instructions and template provided in the learning resources folder and complete a Case Summary Form for this case with only the relevant facts to this case. Not every instruction will be used to complete this form.
  • To prepare the case to turn over to the state, complete the Law Enforcement Officer Certification Form template provided in the learning resources folder, leaving the Assistant District Attorney Section blank.

Discussion 3-1

Boston News published an article about Boston area doctors who hang autographed photos of sports figures in their waiting rooms as a marketing device, with money to be made by impressing prospective patients that the doctors treated the famous athletes. Former Baseball player John was interviewed for the article and told a Boston News reporter about his psychiatrist, Andrew, “I don’t like that man…he is always telling me I am psycho.” The next week the Boston News ran an article on the sports page about Baseball players and mental health issues. The reporter took the time to interview John’s three ex-wives and review court papers indicating John has been the subject of at least three restraining orders for domestic abuse. After the article ran John’s speaking engagements, a source of income for him in retirement all canceled.
His fourth wife filed for divorce and John canceled all future appointments with Dr. Andrew out of frustration. Jon sued the Boston news, its reporter, and his three ex-wives for defamation and slander. He asserted Boston News had been less than truthful with him, giving the impression the he was giving information on where his autographed photo appeared not an expose on his personal life. Has a tort been committed? Has a crime been committed? Please define all legal terms in your answer. Does John have any lawsuit for his image being used by his Psychiatrist Dr. Andrew?

Also, what is Libel?  What is slander?  Is it present here?  If so are there any defenses available to the allegation of Libel and Slander?

Pat tells Chris that an exciting concert is coming to town, and he will spend $40 a ticket if Chris will go to the concert with him. Chris is excited, and she tells Pat that she will attend the concert with him and that he can pick her up at her place at eight o’clock the evening of the concert. Pat goes to pick Chris up and finds no one at home. Too embarrassed to attend the concert by himself, he goes home. Worried that something may have happened to Chris, he tries to reach her by telephone. The following day, he contacts her and she informs him that she changed her mind; she did not want to go to the concert with him and did not feel it was necessary to call. Pat becomes very emotionally upset over the rejection. Two days later, he files a lawsuit against Chris for $80 in damages for the two unused tickets to the concert and $500 for his emotional trauma. How would the case be decided?
Discussion 4-2

John works for an insurance company. The company pays him a salary, commissions on all sales of life and auto insurance policies and also provides a work laptop which is intended to be used solely for work and must be returned at the termination of employment. One day John went to turn on his laptop and the screen was blank. He tried to reboot the computer and still it was blank. After calling his employer, the company tech department instructed him to overnight the hard drive so they could repair it. John followed their instructions. Two days later John was informed by the company that he was fired for using the company computer for his own purposes which is a violation of the corporate employee handbook.  Later that Day John was contacted by a law enforcement official who stated he need to interview him relative to online gambling activity.   When John asked why law enforcement was contacting him, the officer said your former employer sent us a copy of the hard drive!

John swears he did not have any personal filed on the laptop.  He further asserts he never engaged in any online gambling with that computer, he may have done so from his home desktop but never his work computer.

Can John be fired?  Can the employer report its former employees to law enforcement?   Are there any constitutional defenses available to John?  Can John sue his former employer for anything?

If the U.S. continues to increase its reliance on foreign sources of oil, our dependence on OPEC member nations and rogue states

1 "If the U.S. continues to increase its reliance on foreign sources of oil, our dependence on OPEC member nations and rogue states (overlapping categories that include the nations with the largest share of the world's proven oil reserves) will increase… . The American Jewish Committee, therefore, urges that the United States set as a primary national goal a comprehensive energy policy aimed at a substantial reduction in U.S. dependence on imported oil, with the potential for energy flexibility and near independence in the longer term." ------ American Jewish Committee [one of the 51 Major American Jewish Organizations working as the Israel lobby in the United States, http://www.conferenceofpresidents.org/content.asp?id=55], "Energy Security for America," May 5, 2003,http://www.kintera.org/atf/cf/%7B42D75369-D582-4380-8395-D25925B85EAF%7D/EnergySecurityForAmerica.pdf

2 "Oil prices today [May 2005] stand at $50 a barrel [after Hurricane Katrina, up to $64.50 a barrel]. This has created a transfer of wealth of historic proportions from the U.S. to countries that, to paraphrase President George W. Bush, don't particularly like us—"us" being the U.S., Israel, and the Jewish people. Many of the petrodollars sent abroad find their way into the bank accounts of terrorist groups, radical clerics, and scientists who are trying to develop weapons of mass destruction."  American Jewish Committte, "Reducing U.S. Dependence on Imported Oil: A Vital Issue for the Security of the United States and Israel," December 2005, http://www.ajc.org/atf/cf/%7B42D75369-D582-4380-8395-D25925B85EAF%7D/ReducingUSDependenceOil.pdf

8 "An interministerial committee charged with finding ways of turning Israel into an international hub for technology to reduce global oil consumption will present its findings to the cabinet today... In February [2010], the ministers decided that reducing global oil consumption should be a top national goal because it serves Israel's strategic and environmental interests and could be quite lucrative as well. While Israel is only a minuscule player in the global commodities market, the ministers envisioned the country becoming a global center for technologies that decrease oil consumption for transportation by boosting initiatives in these fields." 9 "Israeli company BrightSource Energy is to build seven new solar energy plants across California, providing 1,300 megawatts of energy, in the biggest solar energy deal ever signed. An Israeli company and a Californian one are making solar power history: Southern California Edison (SCE) and BrightSource Energy from Israel have signed the world's largest solar energy deal. Now awaiting approval from the California Public Utilities Commission, when the contracts are fulfilled -- this could happen by as early as 2013 -- the Israeli-CA sun project will power almost 1 million California homes." With over $1 b. in US government loans, Israel’s BrightSource will build the world’s largest solar energy project in California, doubling the solar thermal electricity produced in the US today. They clinked glasses and toasted for two seconds, and then it was back to work and business as usual, says Israel Kroizer from BrightSource Energy, a VC-funded solar thermal energy company, which has just received $1.37 billion in loan guarantees from the US government. It was a well-planned process that took three years to roll out, Kroizer, the chief operating officer for BrightSource tells ISRAEL21c, and one that will put BrightSource, the US and Israeli solar energy entrepreneurs, on the solar energy map. It will be the first new solar thermal plant built in the state of California in about 20 years, and when completed by 2013 it will be the world’s largest solar energy project, nearly doubling the amount of solar thermal electricity produced in the US today. Based on the above strategies and statements involving US energy policy, write a 100 to 150 word-essay in which you discuss concisely but thoughtfully what is the real force behind the making of US energy policy. Is it popular and government concern about the environment, or Israeli concern about the economic power of Arab-dominated OPEC, or both? Could 'giant' US become solar energy-dependent on 'minuscule' Israel? How and why does an Israeli company, NOT an American company, receive over $1 billion in US government loans to provide power for almost 1 million California homes? Homework 2

1. Access the CIA World Factbook at: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html
2. Using the menu "Select a Country or Location," compute the total GDP (in US$ billions) of all 22 Arab League members (note that Occupied Palestine is implicitly referred to as "Gaza Strip" and "West Bank", because Israel continues to pressure the U.S. not to recognize Palestine as an independent state) in 2012 (or the available year). You should use ONLY the "GDP ( official exchange rate)" whenever available, NOT the GDP (purchasing power parity).
3. Compare and contrast the total GDP of the Arab world (the 22 Arab League members) in 2012 (or the available year) with the GDP of EACH ONE of the following countries: United Kingdon, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States in 2012 (or the available year).
4. Compare and contrast the total GDP of Israel with the total GDP of Occupied Palestine (West Bank and Gaza Strip).
Based on (1) the above compare-and-contrast analysis, (2) the assigned materials about "Who gets what from Middle East oil", and (3) the publicized stereotypes about the wealth of the Arab world, write a 200 to 300 word-essay summarizing your findings and conclusions which MUST be illustrated by citing (only in text) the correct compared figures from the CIA Factbook and from the assigned materials about "Who gets what from Middle East oil" (do not submit tables or separate figures with the essay).
Homework 2 is worth 5 points (5 percent of your final grade). Each homework assignment in this course must be formatted as a Microsoft Word file and uploaded through the TurnItIn link (View/Complete) by the deadline.
