Relationship between religious convictions and philosophical thinking

Analyze how the relationship between religious convictions and philosophical thinking changed through the major periods of historical development in Western culture. Which do you believe has been more productive for human society—times of comfortable accommodation or times of critical tension? How have religion and philosophy helped to shape aesthetic expression through the ages? What influence to they have on our lives today?

What was to you personally the most beneficial historical period we studied and why? Pick one of the following periods.

The Ancient World, including ancient Greece (Bishop, Chapter 2–4).
The Spirit of Monotheism: Judaism, Christianity, Islam; Early Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages (Bishop, Chapters 5–7).
The Rise of Modern Thought (Bishop, Chapters 8–13).
Modernism and the Contemporary Spirit (Bishop, Chapters 14 and 15).
