A professional licensing board or professional association governs each area of practice within human services and defines professional ethics or codes of conduct for their members. These professional ethics or codes of conduct clearly define the expected conduct and/or ethical considerations that members must follow to remain in good standing. Disciplinary processes are often in place as a means of enforcement when ethical violations occur. Depending upon the professional licensing board and/or association, various consequences of violations can result, ranging from mediation between involved parties to legal proceedings, depending on the severity of the violation. Human services professionals must be aware of their professional ethics and codes of conduct in their area of interest to avoid violations and related consequences.
