As a newly hired immunologist with CDC, you have been assigned to investigate a communicable disease outbreak in a tourist bus in Italy. All tourists on the bus appear infected with a highly infectious respiratory disease. Initial concern by CDC is the potential spread of Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus which has been recently reported in Italy having spread from Saudi Arabia. This virus causes severe respiratory disease and diarrhea.
What assay would best identify titers in the tourists to indicate exposure and immune response? CDC has provided you with the protein from the N gene as a potential antigen specific to this coronavirus to use in the assay. Briefly describe the basis of the assay.
2.If the classical or alternate complement pathways were activated in response to the Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome coronavirus, discuss which complement products would most likely contribute to innate and adaptive immunity.
