After about 3 weeks with the unit, you notice that everyone arrested by the unit has a welt on their forehead. You are tasked with taking a prisoner to the jail cell, and you get a close look at the welt, which reflects an obverse seal from the silver badge of the attached patrol personnel. When depositing the prisoner into the holding cell, you see another suspect who had been arrested earlier. He bears the welt reflecting the obverse seal of the gold badges of the detectives. You ask the prisoner you are placing in the cell how he got the welt, and he tells you that after he was handcuffed, one of the officers smacked him in the head with his badge and simply said, “Silver.” Upon returning to the office, you ask the supervisor about the welts on the prisoners. He laughs and says it is a competition between the silver badges and gold. Whichever group marks the most prisoners with their badge seal does not have to pay for any drinks at the off-duty party at the end of the month.
Note: This scenario is based on an actual antic of a narcotics unit operating in the late 1970s.

Personal Budget Exercise – MS Excel

Personal Budget Exercise – MS Excel
(These instructions are also attached here as a Word document)
Creating a spreadsheet to track personal expenses is an excellent use of Microsoft Excel.  For this exercise, you will create a spreadsheet to enter a personal budget and track actual expenses for the year.  You may choose to use real data or create a fictitious budget using a monthly income amount of $2,500.

Here are suggested budget categories if you are not using a real budget.  At a minimum, you must have 9 budget categories:
Housing (mortgage or rent)Food
UtilitiesMisc.
Car paymentEntertainment
InsuranceGas
Student LoansSavings

Use Print Preview to review how spreadsheet would print.

This Custom Header text must be Arial 14 point, Bold, and be centered on the page.
Add a custom Footerwith your name in the Right Section and automatic pagination in the Left Section.
0.25
Text format is Arial 10 pointNormal.
Enter column headings :ITEM, MONTHLY BUDGET,
MONTHS – JANUARY THROUGH DECEMBEr
You may abbreviate the months as follows: JAN,FEB,MAR,APR,MAY,JUN,JUL,AUG,
SEP,OCT,NOV,DEC

Text centered in column
All capital letters
Enter your personal budget categories/labels(either your own or the list provided) in the rows under the column heading ITEM.
0.25
Text format is Arial 10 point, Normal.Align text Left in the cell.
Format all cells containing numeric data to Currency, using two decimal places. If you have this set up correctly MS Excel will automatically insert a "$" in front of the amounts that you enter.
0.25
I will be able to tell if you simply typed in the "$." This will result in zero (0) points for this item. If any other format is used besidesCurrency, the score will be zero (0) for this component.
In the column under your MONTHLY BUDGET label, enter a budget amount for each ITEM category.
0.25
Arial 10 pointBold
Align text Right in column
Enter the label "Monthly Budget Total:" in the next rowin the ITEM column. Use the SUM function to calculate the total amount of the MONTHLY BUDGET column in the cell to the right of this label (under the MONTHLY BUDGET values). (This amount should equal your income amount of $2,500.)

Week 2 Assignment
  1. A. What is the probability of rolling a four in the gambling dice game of craps (given two six sided dice)?
B. What is the probability that a player can roll a four 3 times in a row (assume that rolling the dice each time does not affect the outcome of the next roll)?

  1. Population A and Population B both have a mean height of 70.0 inches with an SD of 6.0.  A random sample of 30 people is picked from population A, and random sample of 50 people is selected from Population B.  Which sample mean will probably yield a more accurate estimate of its population mean?  Why?
3.             Suppose we obtained data on vein size after application of a nitroglycerin ointment in a sample of 50 patients.  The mean vein size is found to be 7.8mm with an SD of 2.1.  Using a tdistribution table, what are the confidence limits for a 95% confidence interval?  For a 99% confidence interval?

4.             In a pilot study evaluating the use of a new drug to lower resting heart rates (HR) of patients, the following data was recorded:
Subject #
Resting HR
00172
00288
00371
00487
00564
00677
00779
00859
00966
01068
01178
01289
01391
01481
01577
01675
01769

Given that the average resting HR of the general population for this study is 72, use StatCrunch to perform the appropriate t test.  What is the value of t?  Using an alpha of 0.05, is the tstatistic significant?  Why?  What are the confidence limits for a 95% confidence interval here and what do they mean for this patient group?  Copy and Paste your work from StatCrunch into your Word document submission.

5.             Write one or two sentences that could be used to report the results obtained for the t-test in Exercise 4.

6.             For which of the following situations is the independent groups t-test appropriate (if inappropriate, why?):
a.             The independent variable is infant birth weight at one week (normal vs high); the dependent variable is resting heart rate.
b.             The independent variable is radiation treatment on throat cancer patients (after a low dose and then a high dose treatment); the dependent variable is white blood cell count.

d.             The IV is menopausal state (pre vs post); the DV is attitudes toward menopause.
e.             The IV is nap therapy for narcoleptics (same patients before vs after treatment); the DV is the type of nap they had the following week (had unplanned vs didn’t have unplanned nap).

8.             Suppose we wanted to test the hypothesis that a control group of cancer patients (Group 1) would report higher mean pain ratings than an experimental group receiving special massage treatments (Group 2).  Use the following information.  Compute a t-statistic for independent groups:

mean group 1 = 78.1                             SD21 = 42.1             n1 = 25
mean group 2 = 75.1                             SD22 = 39.7             n2=25

What are the degrees of freedom and the value of t ? Using α=0.05 for a two-tailed test, is this t statistic significant?  Show your calculations (or StatCrunch output) for full credit.
