Name: Unit 4 Group Project Group Mates: Jones, Jilmita Orr, Jennifer
Verner, Natalie Deliverable Length: 3 pages for individual portion and
8-10 page paper reporting to his first post of duty after the academy to
a small resident office at which you work. You and a few others are
included in a meeting to provide administrative support for his first
assignment. In the discussion, you learn that there is a large roundup
of gang members scheduled for the following day at 6:00 a.m. It is a
federal case but is being supported by approximately 50 local officers
and state troopers. A briefing is scheduled at 6:00 p.m. for the
officers involved in tomorrow's arrests. Individual Portion: Each
individual will share 3 deliverables with each other in the group and
will provide a copy for the instructor for accountability of
participation in the group. The following are the deliverables: •A
1-page bulleted list of 10 points that are the more important in your
view on properly processing a defendant in a federal investigation. •A
1-page outline on the best way to format and present the federal
criminal pretrial process, which includes jury selection, evidence and
jury instructions. Please provide examples in your outline of your
recommended format for presenting the process. •A 1-page draft of how to
present the processing requirements and the mandated pretrial measures
required by law. Please add your file. Group Portion: As a group, you
will take all the information that you have attained in the individual
portion and decided to use for coordinating the information for briefing
on the process at the federal court building. Your group is expected to
produce a paper of 8–10 pages that will fulfill the following
requirements. As you answer each requirement, you must provide support
or evidence that will enhance and empirically prove your answers.
Academic criminal justice articles or real-life criminal justice
findings that are not found in journals or other academic sources must
be used in supporting your answers. Please use APA style for all cited
sources including your resource page. •Write out a concise briefing on
the subject that presents it to an audience that does not know anything
about U.S. court systems. ?The briefing is to detail what will happen at
the courthouse relative to the manner in which defendants are brought
into the federal judicial process. ?The federal pretrial process must be
included in the briefing section. •Create a checklist that may be
provided to the officers involved in the operation so they may have a
reference reminding them of what they must do to properly process a
defendant in a federal investigation. ?The checklist should include
processing requirements and the mandated pretrial measures required by
law. •Write a brief description of the federal criminal pretrial process
including how jury selection will occur, How evidence will be presented
and the specific jury instructions for this case and procedure on how
to address it in the courtroom. Use the Small Group Discussion Board to
plan how you will produce these deliverables and to collaborate on
creating the content for the deliverables. Please add your file. For
assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources,
and all course materials. Unit Materials Points Possible: 250 Date Due:

Instructor Comments: •The students should address the constitutional
requirement that defendants be brought before a magistrate without any
unnecessary delay. They must then be processed—a term referring to the
obtaining of fingerprints and photographs for each defendant. The
defendants must then be interviewed by a representative of pretrial
services relative to obtaining the necessary information a judge will
need while determining bail or bond. And, of course, the defendant must
be afforded the opportunity to speak with defense counsel. •Students
should also explain that the defendant will then make his or her initial
appearance before a judge or magistrate where the issue of bail or
pretrial detention will first be addressed. Additional hearings will
follow. Unresolved bail issues may be discussed, a pretrial hearing
(usually waived by defense counsel) may be scheduled as well as numerous
evidentiary hearings. •Students must provide support or evidence that
will enhance and empirically prove your answers. Academic criminal
justice articles or real-life criminal justice findings that are not
found in journals or other academic sources must be cited in supporting
answers. •Students must use APA style for all cited sources including
the resource page.
