Points will be given based on:
1. Thoughtfulness of response.
2. Thoroughness and individuality of response.
3. Use of specific and unique examples to make your points.
Your job is to PROVE that you watched your movie with a critical eye, applying the concepts and terminology you gained from chapters 2 and 3, and their corresponding program(s).

Classic Hollywood Style (Answer BOTH Questions!) Be sure also to put your name and Student ID# on your paper. Be sure to state your film’s TITLE and DIRECTOR in the first paragraph.
Select and view a film represented in Chapter Two, “Classical Hollywood Cinema: Narration.”
You may choose some of the films in the filmography on p. 44. (Citezen Kane, Rear Window, Vertigo, The Terminator, Pulp FIction, Memento, 21 Grams, INside Man. Do NOT choose The Gold Rush, Some Like It Hot, or Mulholland Drive. You may select a film that’s NOT on the filmography list. (Many students do!) Just make sure you can support it as “Classic Narrative Style.”

If you select Citizen Kane,
1) be sure that you go BEYOND the narrative style discussions presented in Chapter Two, and
2) be sure that you do NOT select any shot sequences described in Chapter Two.
Once you have viewed your film, answer the following questions:
1. Identify your movie’s type of narrative style. Narrative “types” are discussed in Chapter Two. Your film may contain more than one narrative style. One style, however, will stand out more than any other. (Such as: Journey to a New Place, Equilibrium/Disruption, Characters/Goals, Flight/Pursuit, Love/Ambition, Jealousy/Failure, Desire, Fantasy/Reality, Unresolved Questions, Artifice Exposed.) Defend your point of view with examples from the film.
2. Select one sequence (short and interesting!) from your film. Watch it several times.
a) Number each shot and describe it simply, using terms presented in Chapter Three. (example: 1. Sequence begins with high angle shot of Nina, descending the staircase.)
b) Describe what you think the shot expresses, emotionally, thematically, and/or plot-wise. --and after you’ve done (a) ad (b) for each of the shots in your sequence, answer (c) below….
c) What do you think is expressed he way the shots in your sequence are edited together? What is the director trying to evoke in us?
