diffusion capacity of the lungs

You are a cardiopulmonary laboratory technician who must develop a test for the diffusion capacity of the lungs. You must choose having the patients breathe oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium or carbon monoxide. Your problem is to determine which of these gases is likely to be the most physiological test for detecting a lung diffusion disorder. Use the following relative diffusion coefficients for the respiratory gases of importance: Carbon Dioxide 20.3, Oxygen 1.0, Helium 0.95, Carbon Monoxide 0.80, Nitrogen 0.50.
