Applying Theory: Environmental Issues

Applying Theory: Environmental Issues
The goal of this assignment is to apply an ethical theory to a real-world situation. You will examine an environmental issue, and apply one of the ethical theories to understand how human interactions with the natural environment raise ethical concerns. You will do this by preparing and posting a PowerPoint slideshow.

  1. Choose oneof the following topics/issues and read about it at the indicated place:
    • Environmental justice/environmental racism (Article: Environmental Justice for All)
    • Environmental harm/pollution of air and water (Chapter 8 in the textbook)
    • Waste reduction (Chapter 8 in the textbook)
  2. Select one philosophical theory (utilitarianism, deontology, or virtue ethics). Consider the following questions pertaining to the theory you have selected:
    • What does the theory tell us about how things operate in the real world?
    • What is the focus of the theory? That is, what aspects of everyday life does the theory address? Another way to think about this is to consider what question(s) the theory is addressing?
    • The focus (or questions) help you think about the topical boundaries of the theory―this course is about ethics and social responsibility and you should concentrate on the ethical and moral aspects of the theory and of the topic you are analyzing. It may help to think in terms of different realms or institutions―does the theory help to explain people’s behavior from a political perspective? From an economic perspective? From a religious perspective? From an ethical perspective? Try to sort through everything that does not represent an ethical question, and address only the ethical issues.
    • How does the theory simplify complex issues to make them more understandable? Another way to think about this is to consider what the elements―or concepts―that make up the theory are. Identify the concepts and how they are related to each other.
  3. Develop one thesis question that applies your philosophical theory to your environmental issue. You will address this question in developing an argument that links the theory to the issue (through your notes and pictures), so make sure you word your question carefully to accomplish this task.
  4. Develop an argument that addresses your question. Build your argument by writing nine sentences. Each sentence should make one important point about the ethical aspects of the environmental issue you are analyzing and will be placed on one slide each. Make sure your argument focuses on ethical arguments, and avoids personal opinion, or arguments based on politics, economics, religion, or topics other than ethics.
  5. Create a PowerPoint slideshow to present your argument. Begin by inserting your argument into the slideshow using the “Notes” feature at the bottom of each slide. Click on the box that says “Click to add notes” and type one sentence at the bottom of each slide. Your sentences and slides should link together to form your argument.
  6. Find photos to illustrate each sentence, and post the photo on the slide above the note. You can use your own personal photos or can search the internet for photos that are appropriate. Make sure the photos are not protected from copying; you should only use photos that are in the public domain. Cite the sources from which you get your photos underneath the photo on each slide.
Your slide show should present what you would usually write in a paper. The slideshow should be 11 slides long (1 slide for title page, 9 slides for your arguments, 1 slide for references). All citations and references should be in APA format. Starbucks - Case study

Write a paper that answers the four case study questions listed below in narrative form using APA format. Provide supporting rationale into your responses to the case study questions. The case analysis should be three to four pages long, excluding title and reference pages, with at least two references
Create a job description and job specification for a Starbucks employee. Do not simply copy and paste the job description from the Starbucks’ website or any other source. The Starbucks site can be utilized to view the different job requirements of employees, but the intent of the assignment is to apply job specification concepts from the book to this case. Cite any references.
What form of departmentalization should Starbucks use? Should the form be changed in stores offering food products and lunch? Why or why not?
When the company began to experience financial problems, should the leadership try to centralize power and decision-making or decentralize the operation?

Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination

Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination
In many cases, prejudice stems from the unknown. As individuals, we tend to migrate toward those who may look like us, act like us, and think like us. As a result, it may be difficult for us to open our minds and embrace those whose values, beliefs, and overall sense of self differ from our own.
For this assignment, compose a paper that is three to four pages in length.  In your paper, discuss the impacts of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination in the context of social psychology.  Be sure to address the following points:
1.   Define and describe the following terms: prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and ingroup vs. outgroup. Based on your own experiences in the social world, can you relate to any of these terms? Do you identify with a particular term? Why or why not?
2.   Examine the social, cognitive, and societal origins of prejudice and stereotypes. Be sure to include specific information regarding categorization, such as ingroup favoritism and the outgroup homogeneity effect, norms, competition for resources, and social inequalities. Of the categories presented, which do you think are the most significant in our society and in your particular community?
3.   Analyze the influences that promote stereotyping, and offer strategies to reduce prejudice. What are the consequences of stereotyping and discrimination? Who does this behavior hurt, and in what ways does it hurt them? Are we inadvertently creating self-fulfilling prophecies in our society? If so, how can we take steps to improve attitudes, judgments, and behaviors?
Your paper must include an introduction, a thesis statement, and a conclusion. Your completed assignment should be three to four pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), include a minimum of three references, and follow APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center

T&E lessons

Throughout the unit you have been completing weekly hands-on tasks to gain insight into what T&E lessons might entail. These activities have generally been pitched to you at an ‘adult’ level, so for this task you will consider how to modify one of the weekly activities within this unit and make it suitable for middle-childhood T&E students.
You will present this task in the form of an extended podcast (including audio, video, pictures, text, etc.) that can be downloaded and viewed on a mobile phone. Emphasis must be placed on either the Information, Systems or Materials outcome of T&E (pick one). Use Microsoft Movie Maker (or similar for Mac users) for producing your podcast. It is to be a maximum of 2 minutes in length and less then 10MB in file size. You will have to be very efficient and effective in the way you present the extended podcast, and are expected to integrate a rich range of information formats. You will upload 2 files for this task - 1) a Word document with a completed cover page, marking rubric, and reference list and 2) a movie file.
Week 7 is devoted to a tutor-led discussion of the assessment’s requirements and how they should be addressed and will be organized by your tutor.
The quality of your submission will be judged primarily on its usefulness to teachers of Technology and Enterprise and its demonstration of the potential of enhanced podcasts for presenting diverse types of information in an economical and powerful manner.
